Working With Traits
What Are Traits?
In the Character Arcs view of Campfire, you can add important traits to each character. You should add traits that change significantly for the character over the course of the story. For example, you might add a trait called “Fear” for the protagonist of a horror story. You’ll then be able to mark how afraid the character is in each story event, so you can visually understand the ebb and flow of the emotion over time.
Adding, Renaming & Deleting Traits
Before you can add a new trait, you’ll want to make sure you have a character and event selected. Once you do this, you’ll see the Add Trait button visible in the bottom-left panel on the screen. Click this button to add your trait. Keep in mind that each character has his own trait list. So, adding, renaming, and deleting traits applies to that character in all story events!
To rename a trait, mouse over it and click the pencil icon. A window will appear, prompting you for the new trait name. Enter the new name and click OK to save your changes.
To delete a trait, mouse over it and click the X icon. This will delete the trait permanently, so make sure you’re OK with losing all information about that character’s trait!
Using Character Traits
Now you know how to add, rename, and delete traits. But you need to know how to actually use them; that is, you need to know how to designate how the trait changes for its character over time. To do this, you’ll have to navigate from Event to Event using the events panel at the top of the screen. For each event, you can use the trait’s slider to change its value for that event. You’ll see your changes reflected in the graph that appears in the bottom right panel. The graph shows how the selected trait changes for the selected character over the course of the story.
